Why you should travel with Friends
Travelling with friends has many advantages and should be considered even by the most confident of solo travellers! Here are just a few reasons why I love travelling with friends
- There are no lonely moments. It’s hard to feel homesick with your bestie by your side.
- There is someone who remembers those special shared moments who you can reminisce with afterwards
- You will feel safer travelling with a good friend by your side.
- Friends can help share the burdens associated with travel. You can split the organisation, planning and decision making making it less work and more fun for all.
- Making new friends on the road can mean that you have friends in every corner of the world – a perfect excuse to travel again to have a reunion!
- It can even be cheaper by sharing the costs of accommodation and even sharing meals.
- You will do more. When you travel solo, you need to think twice before going somewhere at night or taking a solo hike. When you have company, you are more likely to experience more.
- Your friendships will often be much stronger when you come home…
- …And any friendships that broke along the road were likely not friendships worth having. Travel helps you work out who ‘your people’ are.

How to make friends travelling
So what if you don’t have any friends that enjoy travelling? Maybe you don’t have any travel buddies because your friends are all settled down with families? I get it. That happened to me too when I hit my thirties and I lost my travel companions.
But I didn’t let it stop me. In fact, it made me travel more often and further from my comfort zone. It made me appreciate that I had no ties and made me determined to travel freely whilst I had the opportunity. I threw myself into exploring every place on my bucket list.
So how can you travel if you don’t have a travel buddy?
- Join a group tour and make new friends! I recommend G Adventures and Intrepid Travel! Dragoman are also good and suit a younger crowd not afraid to rough it a bit. Read my article about the best group tour companies for single travellers.
- Travel slow. The longer you stay in a place, the more chance you will make new travel friends.
- Join travel forums and travel Facebook groups. You might find a travel friend there! Make sure you spend time getting to know each other via video calls before you hit the road and let someone know where you will be! Safety first!
- Stay in hostels. These are sociable places with common rooms and you don’t even need to stay in a dormitory – many have single rooms now too!
